Sarah Palin Email Hacked!

Hackers broke into the email account used by Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, revealing inconsequential personal messages received since presidential candidate John McCain selected her as his running mate.

"This is a shocking invasion of the [Alaska] Governor's privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them," the McCain campaign said in a statement.

According to Wikileaks, Anonymous, the infamous internet hacking community, gained access to Palin's email account around midnight on Tuesday. Wikileaks also suggested that the violation of Palin's privacy was justified because Palin uses a private email account to conduct government business, which keeps Palin's email from becoming public through freedom of information requests.

Threat Level, the Wired magazine blog, has confirmed that at least one of the emails is authentic.

Maybe she shouldn't have been using her personal email account to conduct state business as a way of avoiding oversight.

But since she did use her personal account to conduct state business, she potentially put sensitive information at risk. I guess that's the kind of judgment we can expect from her.

It wasn't right for hackers to invade her privacy like that, but it wasn't right for Palin to try to skirt disclosure laws, either.
